Original description
„Carcharodus stauderi, species nova“ Reverdin, J.-L., 1913 (Notes sur les genres Hesperia et
Carcharodus. - Bull. Soc. lépid. Genève, 2 (4): 225; Pl. 21, Fig. 5, 12, Pl. 22, Fig. 3, 7). Locus typicus: El Kantara (southern Algeria).
Diagnosis
Resembles closely C. baeticus, secure determiation only possible by analysis of the genitalia. Male with hair tuft on forewing underside.

Subspecies
Apart from the nominotypical subspecies two more subspecies have been described: ramses from Egypt and ambiguus (Turkey and Middle East).
Distribution
Northern Africa, Levant to some Greek island (Kos, Rhodos). Middle east to Iran.
Flight time
Several generations. The phenology is still poorly known. Hibernates probably as half-grown caterpillar.
Ecology and habitats
Dry and hot areas. This ist the most heat-tolerant species of the genus, it even lives in semideserts (e.g. on Sinai peninsula).
Hostplants
Still insufficiently known. Found on Ballota undulata, but is probably feeding on other species of
Ballota and maybe Marrubium).
