Original description

Rambur, P., 1839 (Faune entomologique d‘Andalousie: Taf. ??, Fig. 3). Locus typicus is Andalusia (according to Ribbe 1909: Malaga and Granada).


Diagnosis

Colour of upper side is grey-brown (brighter than C. alceae), upper side of hind wings with bright  central area and a double row of darker spots.  Male with hair tuft on underside of hind wings. Underside of hind wingw white with light brown markings.

Subspecies

Apart from the nominate subspecies the ssp. octoduriensis from Valais (Switzerland) has been described.


Distribution

Westmediterranean: Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy. This species becomes much rarer towards the east. In Switzerland extinct.


Flight time

Two generations. The young caterpillar hibernates.


Ecology and habitats

Places with the foodplants, often on cattle or sheep pastures and ruderal areas.


Hostplants

Found on Marrubium vulgare and Ballota nigra / foetida.
